Children, families, and staff are enjoying the benefits of our Community Build Project! With the inspiration and plans of designer, Rusty Keeler of Planet Earth Playscapes, and with the collaborative efforts of the GCS Playscape Committee and MANY generous contributors and facilitators, our playground redesign dreams were made into a reality. In May 2002, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and donated their time, talents, and an incredible amount of hard work to create a one-of-a-kind outdoor learning environment for the children of Groton Community School.
Our goals were to create a multi-sensory play environment, with creative choices for children to encourage their cognitive, social, and emotional development, as well as build their fine and gross motor skills. An emphasis was made on natural elements and involved extensive landscaping and the planting of trees, shrubs, perennials, herbs, and vegetables for children to experience the wonder of growing things and the seasons. Sound elements were also added such as wind chimes and outdoor musical instruments. In addition to our wooden climbers, playground highlights include:
-
Rubberized Tricycle Track
-
Construction Village with Sand Area, Water Log, Town Hall and Playhouse
-
Weather Station and Bird Blind Science Centers
-
Garden Patio and Butterfly Garden
-
Big Hill Slide and Sled Area
-
Swing Center and Shade Trellis
-
Creative Movement Area and Outdoor Classroom
-
Conservation Meadow and Thunder Drum
We would like to again acknowledge and thank all the families, community members, and businesses that made our playground redesign possible, successful, and sure to be enjoyed by young children for years to come!
