Dear GCS Families,
How wonderful it has been to welcome all our families back from our April break. Many of you may have been traveling, enjoying special time with family and friends, or simply enjoying a different daily rhythm at home. It is always nice to have a change in routine, which teaches children about flexibility and the ability to solve problems when things don’t always go as planned. As children return to school, we often see renewed energy as they reconnect with friends and are eager to see what the plans are for the day. At the same time, we recognize that not every family has the opportunity for time away, and many continue to balance work and childcare needs. We are grateful for the effort and flexibility this requires, and we thank you for the many ways you support our GCS school community.
WELCOME SPRING!
Spring has officially sprung at 110 Boston Road, and you can feel the excitement everywhere you look! Our playground is waking up from winter — Grass is beginning to turn green, hostas are popping up along the playground sandbox, lady bugs abound, and our garden beds are getting ready for another season of growing. Inside the classrooms, little hands have been busy planting seeds on our growing shelves, carefully watering and watching as tiny sprouts begin to appear. Before long, these little plants will make their big move into our greenhouse or playground planters!
We have also kicked off composting again in the classrooms, and it is exciting to hear children discussing what can go in the bin, and what needs to go into the trash. The children are learning how to care for our earth in meaningful ways, and we’re getting our rain barrels ready to join the playground soon, too.
WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD
We enjoyed a fabulous week celebrating NAEYC’s Week of the Young Child earlier this month! As a nationally accredited children’s center, we look forward to this joyful celebration of early learning, young children, and the adults who support them. It was especially meaningful this year, as it is the 100th year for the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Activities at GCS included visits from Animal Adventures, decorating/planting sand pails to “fill the buckets” of special community members, as well as classroom happenings. Thank you to all of our Room Parents for the delicious WOYC breakfast and luncheon for Staff! The week was filled with amazing artwork as well, from creating our school-wide “Soaring Kites” art display to the annual Aqua Room Art Show at the Groton Post Office.
SPRING SPRUCE-UP
Mark your calendars and roll up your sleeves for our Spring Spruce-Up on Saturday, May 9th from 9:00 AM–1:00 PM! We’d love your help to freshen up our outdoor spaces after a long winter; and it’s always a fun and productive time together! No skill is needed, just your willingness and muscle, and perhaps a few garden tools. Please refer to the Board of Directors weekly newsletter for more information and to sign up.
SUMMER FUN
It’s hard to believe we are beginning to wind down the school year already. At the same time, we are getting excited about GCS Camp and all the fun that’s ahead. If you’re thinking about joining us but have not yet enrolled, we do still have a few half-day spots open in July! Please stop by the front desk for availability.
OUR CHILDREN / OUR THEME
Most of all, we are so proud of the children. Each day they are growing, making friends, solving problems, and becoming more confident learners. Our theme, Story Seeds: Planting Seeds of Literacy, is truly blooming in classrooms as we continue to offer engaging, creative experiences that spark their curiosity, build on knowledge, and shape children’s love of learning. It was wonderful to see GCS parents join us for our “Little Readers & Literacy Rich Spaces” Community Lecture. Be on the lookout for more details about our “Hidden Story” school-wide mixed media art installation now on display at The Groton Center. The letters embedded in the artwork represent children’s journey along the path of literacy.
GCS FAMILY PICNIC
Please join us, along with other GCS families, for our annual GCS Family Picnic. This event will be held at the Groton Playground & Gazebo on Friday, June 5th, beginning at 5 PM. Please refer to the Board of Director’s Weekly Newsletter for more details.

THANK YOU!
Thank you to the MWF & TTh PM Blue Room families for providing a “sweet” tea party before vacation, where Staff enjoyed flavorful teas & treats all afternoon.
We would also like to thank the following Stock-the-Staff-Room volunteers for this month’s snacks & beverages: Sarah Cleary, Laura Goodwin, Vicky Gudelot, Bethany McGuiggan, Adriana Sanchez-Correa, Erica Tamlyn & Catherine Wong.
Our thanks, too, for various donations to the school in April: To the Delaney family for a pretend money set; to the Krishanthan family for Staff snacks; to Inga Nuccio for a handmade water wall for the playground & “Earth” cakes for classes and Staff; and to Debbie Ross for her donation of music & movement materials.
